The Designer Says

I’m not usually one for the “Quote”. You know, the deep, meaningful quote about some subject or another that somehow always carries a little too much weight with some individuals and they end up basing their entire life’s philosophy on one or maybe a few of them.

But, they can be a nice bit of fun, and I suppose they can hold up a mirror to ourselves from time to time. So, when I came across this smart little red book called ‘The Designer Says’, I thought, why not?

Sara Bader is an unapologetic quote collector and being in the creative field it seemed that the two would come together. And she has created quite a nice collection of carefully curated examples.

You’ll find words from Saul Bass, Millton Glaser and many more words of wisdom from the creative world.

The whole book opens with Saul Bass, “I want to make beautiful things even if nobody cares.” That, in many ways, sums up the graphic designer. We have an inbuilt desire to make things better; work better, look better, be used more, enjoyed, be effective, and be lovely. So whether you’re a designer looking for some interesting thoughts from your fellow creatives, or a marketeer looking to understand the designer’s mind a little more, this little book is stuffed with something that will resonate with you.

“If your words aren’t truthful, the finest optically letter-spaced typography won’t help.” Edward Tuft.
