Leica M Monochrome

So here’s a treat if your passion for black and white photography knows no bounds, and when we say “no bounds” we really mean it. The Leica M Monochrome…

Beyond the pockets of us here at Caffeine, this little gem nevertheless generated many “Ooohs” and “Can I have a pay rise? Ahhs”.

Leica make great claims for this 18 megapixel monochrome digital camera. It doesn’t “see” colour but rather records the true luminance values—all parceled up in a timeless, emotive body.

Right, so here’s the link to the Leica page, but just a warning before you go scampering over there full of wonder that you’ll be the next celebrated photojournalist of your generation, and that’s the price, a pretty hefty £6,100. We did say you needed a “passion” for black and white photography didn’t we.

If this Leica M Monochrome camera stirs memories and nostalgia for the heyday of photojournalism, these links to a selection of some of the most highly regarded photojournalists might of be of interest to you.

Robert Capa “If your photographs aren’t good enough, you’re not close enough.”

Werner Bischof  “Leading a satisfying life of plenty had blinded many of us to the immense hardships beyond our borders.”

Constantine Manos “By choosing a precise intersection between subject and time, he [the photographer] may transform the ordinary into the extraordinary and the real into the surreal.”
