Look Big – Quick Look…

A quick book review of… Look Big: And Other Tips for Surviving Animal Encounters of All Kinds

If you don’t know how to deal with coming face to face with an urban deer, maybe you need this book. Admittedly, it’s written for a more North American market and the range of more ‘interesting’ animal you may encounter, but it was the beautiful illustration work by Jeff Östberg really caught my eye and make this a lovely book to flip through.

Marketed as a humorous and helpful illustrated field guide to fending off 50 of our most feared—or frustrating—wild animals, including survival techniques, wildlife etiquette, and other essential advice, it does so with a lovely sense of humour.

“And who knows, maybe one day you too will need to know what to do when you meet a moose up close?!

And who knows, maybe one day you too will need to know what to do when you meet a moose up close? Here’s a typical excerpt:

“If you panic, the raccoon panics. And that makes things worse. So keep calm and help the raccoons move on. Open windows. Make a trail of marshmallows, cheese, Fig Newtons (apparently, they’re big fans) to try to lead the rascal outside, banging a broom behind it. Never try to trap one yourself — call animal control. These guys can get aggressive, especially if they’ve had babies and made your house their home.”

It also features real-life encounter stories from popular writers such as Samin Nosrat and Peter Orner. I think you’ll find yourself spending more time than you expected finding out how to look big.
