Too Many Cooks
Designing for your brand can be exciting, until everyone wants to get involved. Too many opinions often lead to confusion, cluttered visuals, and a final design that doesn’t reflect your original idea. Here’s how to avoid the common problems that happen when too many cooks get involved in the design process.
1. Too Many Opinions, Not Enough Direction
Everyone has an idea, but they don’t always agree. The result? A messy design with no clear message.
The Fix: Involve only the key decision-makers early on. Keep the feedback focused and based on your goals rather than just personal taste.
2. Trying to Add Too Much
Too many fonts, colours, and features can end up looking cluttered and confusing.
The Fix: Keep it simple. Focus on the essentials. A clean design helps people understand your message more easily.
3. Endless Edits
‘Just one more change’, becomes ten. You lose time and the original idea can become diluted.
The Fix: Set clear boundaries. Agree on a final direction and stick to it. Minor tweaks are fine, but avoid redesigning from scratch each time.
4. Vague Feedback
Feedback like ‘make it pop’ or can we ‘add more personality’ doesn’t give a designer much to work with.
The Fix: Be specific. If something isn’t working, explain why. Good feedback helps the designer improve the work without guessing.
5. No Clear Vision
Sometimes people know what they don’t want, but not what they do want. That makes design much harder. And too many people involved can make this even more difficult.
The Fix: Start with a strong brief. Be clear about what you’re aiming for and what to include, what to avoid, and how the design should feel.
Good design needs focus and direction, not too many cooks. While collaboration is helpful, too many voices can complicate the process. Keep the team small, give clear feedback, and trust your designer to bring your vision to life. The simpler the process, the better the outcome.
