Common Design Mistakes That Could Hold Your Marketing Back
Marketing involves many moving parts, including strategy, content, timing; but design is often the element that brings everything together and why we love design.
Good design can make your campaign more engaging and effective. However, poorly designed material can cause confusion, reduce trust, and put people off. So we’ve put together five common design mistakes people can often make and some suggestions of how to avoid them.
1. Using Too Many Fonts
Fonts can be tempting to play around with, especially when there are so many to choose from, I know I used to many when I started out. But mixing too many styles can make your design look messy and unprofessional. Stick to a maximum of two or three fonts. Use one for headings, one for body text, and possibly (if you really need to) a third for accents or special emphasis. This keeps your design tidy and easier to read.
2. Not Leaving Enough White Space
White space (also known as negative space) is the empty space around elements in your design. It helps the viewer focus and makes your content easier to digest. It can be tempting to fill every part of the page with text, images, or graphics, leaving no room to breathe. Sometimes with inexperience, the temptation is to fill this space in. And we still have lots of conversations about white space with quite a few new clients.
So make sure you allow for clear spacing around key elements. Don’t be afraid of empty space, it helps guide the viewer’s eye to the points you want them to see and improves overall readability and approachability.
3. Poor Image Quality
Images play a key role in visual communication. Low-resolution or pixelated images can instantly reduce the quality of your material and make it appear unprofessional. Always use high-resolution images suitable for your platform (social media, print, websites, etc) and perhaps consider investing in some quality stock photography or even better some custom visuals if your budget allows.
4. Overloading the Design with Text
People generally scan content quickly, especially online. If your design is packed with long blocks of text, your key message may be lost. Keep your messages concise. Use short paragraphs, bullet points, and clear headings. Aim to communicate your main point in just a few seconds.
5. Not Optimising for Mobile Devices (Digital Media)
Remember, usually a large part of your audience will view your digital marketing materials on their phones.
If your design doesn’t translate well to smaller screens, you could lose potential customers. Always preview your designs on a mobile device before launching. Check that text is readable, images load correctly, and buttons are easy to tap.
Good design supports your marketing goals by making your message clearer, more attractive, and easier to engage with. Avoiding these five common mistakes can make a real difference in how your campaign performs. Keep things simple, clear, and consistent, and always consider how your audience will experience the design across different platforms.
