For the late May bank holiday weekend, I went on a trip to York with my wife and a group of friends for a few days of exploring, eating and wandering through historic streets. With the city buzzing in the heatwave bank holiday sunshine, it felt like the perfect place to slow down and take in some fresh visual inspiration.

As a graphic designer, I’m always drawn to places with strong visual character, and York was full of it. I really enjoyed walking through the old streets, taking in the textures, colours and architectural details that make the city so unique. Every corner looked like it belonged in a storybook.

One of the places I was most excited to visit was The Shambles. The narrow street and crooked medieval buildings were packed with personality and history. I found myself constantly stopping to take photos and admire all the little design details hidden around the shopfronts and signs.

I also really enjoyed walking the York city walls. Seeing the rooftops, towers and cathedral views from above was the perfect way to experience the city. I loved how the historic architecture blended with modern life, and York felt full of that contrast.

The food scene was another big highlight of the trip. We enjoyed pierogis at a Polish restaurant, tapas at a Spanish restaurant and spent some time relaxing in a park in the city with a good coffee while the weather stayed this good.

I had a feeling York was going to be full of inspiration – and it absolutely was.
